Anchor Church Needs Jesus, So Let’s Fast Together

November 15, 2011

“A Christian fellowship lives and exists by the intercession of its members for one another, or it collapses.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Anchor Church is a community of people that desires to know Jesus and wants others to know Jesus; the only way either of those things happens is by and through the work of Jesus.

Sunday I preached on feasting and fasting and called our community to commit to fasting and praying each Wednesday. We fast because we are needy for Jesus. We don’t fast because we are strong, we fast because we are weak. We abstain from the gift that is food because sometimes our appetite for food is greater than our appetite for the Person who gave us the food. We don’t live only on food, “but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).

When we fast we demonstrate our dependence on Jesus. We don’t fast to earn anything from Him.  We fast because we need Jesus more than anything. It is in our weakness, neediness, and dependence that Jesus moves through us. Jesus is the one who has come to serve (Mark 10:45), and it is in our weakness that He moves through us (2 Corinthians 4:7).

We will commit every Wednesday to praying and fasting for Anchor Church, the other churches in our city, and for the people of Seattle.

For a short weekly fast, I recommend abstaining from food starting after dinner on Tuesday night, and then breaking the fast at dinner time on Wednesday.  If health concerns or other circumstances prevent you from a food fast, I would encourage you to join us in fasting from something else, perhaps music for a day.

Anchor 101 - Saturday, April 16

April 3, 2011

With Anchor 101 we will attempt to answer the questions:

  • What is it to be Gospel centered?
  • What does it look like for Anchor to be a church for the city?
  • What does it mean to live on Jesus’ mission to Seattle?
  • What makes Anchor distinct?

Anchor 101 is the first step in becoming a member of Anchor Church.  If Anchor is your home or you have been considering joining our community this class is for you. If you have any questions please email community@ancohorseattle.org.

Next Sunday: I AM The Way, The Truth, & The Life

February 7, 2011

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.”

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

John 14:9-13
